Brazilian Vegan Acaraje – Black Eyed Bean Fritters

A typical Brazilian street food snack made with Black Eyed Beans that represents a traditional Falafel (But these are baked!) which I then serve with Homemade Hummus and Salsa and a squeeze of fresh Lime.


1Preheat the oven to 180 Degrees Celcius

2Soak the black-eyes peas for 12-24 hours. Remove the husks

3Mash in a food processor with garlic, a little bit of salt and black pepper to taste.

4Make balls out of the mixture approximately golf ball size. Use olive oil to coat the baking dish. Coat the mixture with a little oil as well. Bake for 20 minutes or until a golden-brown color. Flip and bake another 10 minutes.

5Traditional Acaraje has a topping called Vatapa which is made from bread, shrimp, coconut oil, finely ground peanuts and palm oil mashed into a creamy paste. I replace Vatapa with homemade Hummus. On top of Vatapa, Acaraje also usually has a mixture of finely diced tomatoes and onions.


2 Cups Black Eyed Peas

2 T Garlic

2 T Olive Oil

1 t Salt

1t Pepper

1 Tub Freshly Made Hummus

1 Tomato Finely Diced

½ Onion Finely Diced

Small handful of fresh coriander

Lime Wedges
